Our History

Established in 1974, the National Military Intelligence Foundation (NMIF) is a distinguished 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing public awareness of the critical roles played by intelligence professionals in safeguarding our nation. As the world grows increasingly complex and interconnected, the challenges to national security become more profound, underscoring the urgent need for skilled intelligence professionals now more than ever.

In today’s global landscape, effective national security depends on a diverse and adept workforce. Our mission is driven by the need to protect the nation, understand the global environment, and guide policymaking to ensure enduring peace and prosperity. This requires professionals across military, civilian, and private sectors who possess a range of technical and analytical skills and are committed to serving our country.

The NMIF believes in the power of the intelligence mission to inspire young people to join the intelligence profession as a career of service to the nation. NMIF continuously engages current and future intelligence professionals, organizations, industry, and academic institutions to contribute to the overall sustainment of the U.S. military intelligence workforce. 

By championing these core values, NMIF plays a pivotal role in advancing public understanding of the intelligence profession and supporting the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to secure our country. NMIF annually hosts The Night of Heroes where exemplary intelligence professionals are recognized for their incredible contributions to national security and scholarships are presented to outstanding individuals studying for careers supporting our national security.

NMIF and the U.S Intelligence Community (IC) collaborate to honor the selected awardees.  This formal event brings together outstanding performers across the IC with senior military and government leaders as well as members of industry, academia and supporters of our nation’s national security.  Awardees are individuals selected by their own military service or IC agency leadership and consist of civilian government employees and members of the armed forces assigned to active, reserve, and national guard components.  The narratives associated with each awardee are compelling, inspiring and highlight the tremendous contribution these individuals made towards the safety and security of our nation and often the lives saved as a direct result of their actions. 

Supporting the Next Generation with NMIF Scholarships.  The foundation sponsors a competitive annual NMIF scholarship process which assists promising undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate students studying in the intelligence, defense, cyber, and national security-related fields.  The annual NMIF Merit Scholarship Program continues to grow and currently awards at least $30,000 annually through direct funding to the students’ universities to defer their education costs.  Students from over 60 universities regularly apply for NMIF scholarships.

The NMIF Merit Scholarships mean the world to the students. Students are evaluated on academic performance, financial need, career goals and faculty recommendations.  It is an acknowledgement of their hard work and dedication in pursuit of courses of study, internships, and degrees building towards a career in intelligence, national security, and related disciplines. These brilliant students look to their predecessors for guidance, validation, and support. This support contributes to the furtherance of their career, providing students the recognition and encouragement needed to go forth and do great things for our nation.  Our typical graduate and post-graduate selectees are already serving in the intelligence community as they further their professional education.
