The Hackensack River was in a sad way when I first moved to New Jersey, and seeing the transformation in progress is incredible.

We need clean rivers to sustain the diverse ecosystems that are essential for life. Our river provides us with our drinking water, food, transportation, recreation, and supports vast amounts of wildlife. Our river and its watershed have suffered from over 100 years of human misuse and neglect. Cleaning up a polluted waterway is a big job and will take years of work. To make this a reality we need everyone in our watershed to become aware and get involved.

The global issues surrounding climate change are keenly felt in the Hackensack Meadowlands region. Increased local flooding during heavy rains and warming waters causing harm to local fish and wildlife are becoming more and more problematic. Our wetlands are vital to protect us from future flooding.

Hackensack Riverkeeper is dedicated to advocacy, legislation, ensuring regulatory compliance and the responsibility needed to protect our wetlands, reservoirs and swamps, as well as the communities that are directly impacted by the quantity and quality of our delicate water sources.
