Join PCHC on Wednesday, October 17, as we repel stigma and rappel Over The Edge of the Cross Insurance Center to raise money for Recovery services in Maine! Help us fight the opioid epidemic! Your support will save lives!

A few months ago I became aware of a serious life threatening situation related to substance abuse that was happening with a very close family friend. He had been life-flighted to a nearby hospital. His organ functions were failing. He needed a breathing tube and a central line. He had alcohol-induced hepatitis and was experiencing very serious opiate withdrawal.

He has the most amazing wife, bright preschool-aged son and the kindest young daughter you have ever met. Prior to this event, this husband and father of two had sought medical help for his addiction, but was unable to access the immediate, direct and coordinated help he needed.  He took matters into his own hands and decided to wean himself off alcohol as well as the myriad of substances that he was prescribed.

He thought he could take care of this himself, but his body failed him as he withdrew. He began falling down regularly and hitting his head on the floor. He stopped eating for days. His eyes began to glow yellow and he became delusional. Fortunately, he landed in the ICU. If he hadn’t, I have no doubt that he would not have continued to live, though he wanted to.

I share this story because I am “over the edge” optimistic that with better access to treatment, at all access points within our healthcare system, stories like this can be avoided.

Efforts like this will help improve access to treatment, reduce stigma and literally save lives. Will you join me?

R(a)pel Stigma:  GO OVER THE EDGE FOR RECOVERY!

R(a)pelling Stigma is a new adventure fundraiser hosted by Penobscot Community Health Care (PCHC) that challenges you to take your community support to new heights! The Over The Edge Experience provides the unique opportunity for individuals or groups to raise funds in exchange for an over the edge adventure - rappelling from the top of the Cross Insurance Center!   Like patients in recovery from substance abuse disorder, you only need courage to participate -  No climbing or rappelling experience necessary, just enough courage to go over the edge!

EVENT DATE: Wednesday, October 17
LOCATION: Cross Insurance Center

WHY BE A PART OF THIS EVENT?

Substance use disorder is a chronic brain disease that is affecting thousands of Mainers - our neighbors, friends, and families.   In fact, nationally 1 in 8 children is living with a parent struggling with some type of substance use disorder.  The biggest barrier to treatment is  the stigma associated with simply admitting you have the disease.  As a prominent member of our community, your words and actions can help us repel this stigma.

PCHC is  committed to repelling the stigma around this disease and ensuring people have access to treatment.  You can help by sponsoring or participating in this event.  Help us reach our goal of $100,000 to support PCHC's vast recovery programs, and ensure that anyone, regardless of ability to pay, can access treatment.  Let's eradicate this disease, together.
