Imagine a world where your daily choices like what you eat, where you work, who you spend time with are not entirely your own. For many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), this was once the reality. But many others and I are here today because we know that a different, better world is possible. That that world exists now! The Arc of Monroe is a vital organization dedicated to empowering individuals with IDD to live truly integrated lives and reach their full potential. We don’t just offer services we strive to build a progressive community where everyone belongs.

The "Why” Empowerment vs. Care
Often, I’m asked am I a caretaker. I stop to think of the short version of how to explain that I am so much more. The Arc is so much more. Do we provide care yes, but we are, stylists, chefs, nurses, advocates, launderers, taxi drivers, teachers, protectors, housekeepers, friends, family, and so much more.  Working for The Arc is about empowerment. Our mission moves beyond passive care and focuses on actively capitalizing on the unique abilities of every person that we support. We recognize that every person has the right to make their own choices and lead a self-directed life.

By providing personalized support, competitive employment training, and independent living resources, we ensure that the people that we support are not just occupying space but thriving in it.
