I am fortunate to have my health, a roof over my head, a car to get around, and enough resources to live comfortably. This is not the case for many seniors I encounter who struggle to make ends meet, rely on public transportation, are facing major health issues and live alone or are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's/Parkinson's or a terminal illness. That is why I am going Over the Edge for South Sound Senior Services.
Just to be clear, I don't like heights at all and have never done this before. But this is a minor challenge compared to the day-to-day struggles of many seniors in this area. South Sound Senior Services provides a broad range of services -- meals on wheels support, hot lunches, a thrift shop, classes and meeting spaces, fitness programs, support for pets -- targeted to seniors. Why support Senior Services for South Sound?
Senior Services for South Sound is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to supporting seniors in our community for more than 50 years. We operate seniors centers in Olympia and Lacey, which offer many activities, classes and programs. Each year, we feed thousands of seniors through community dining and Meals on Wheels. We envision a South Sound where people are empowered and engaged in the community as they age, valued for their wisdom and experience, and have a positive sense of self-worth.
This year, we are particularly focused on battling isolation and loneliness among seniors. New research has shown the profound health impacts these cause, and the Surgeon General has declared them a public health crisis. Support from you helps us keep seniors active and engaged, which has been shown to decrease the risk of such conditions as heart disease, strokes and dementia.
