Team Nickerson hasn't added a story.
A little over 3 years ago Harry and I were diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). When I say a little over 3 years ago like any parent receiving a devastating diagnosis I can tell you the day and pretty much the minute we received the news. While we had a good idea of what was coming nothing can prepare you for that pain in that moment or probably worse the hours and days ahead while you grieve the loss and contemplate this new life. Can you imagine being 10 and learning you're going blind and all the thoughts that go with that?
While the first hours, days and weeks were certainly very rough many silver linings have come from this condition. We have met a new community, made new friends and taken up a new awesome sport, goalball. Harry has learned how resilient he truly is. It has empowered him to help educate others that with a difficult diagnosis/condition you have to continue to get out there, do what you love and live life. You have to try not to think " I can't do that " but " how can I do that?" It's with that attitude and passion that Harry with the support of his coach, teammates and APSEA) continues to compete in gymnastics. This year earning the bronze medal at the Atlantic Canadian Gymnastics Championships.
Recently we travelled with our goalball team to the parasport games in Ontario. There Harry got to play with and against men's National team members and they won gold! It was an incredible moment and hard to sum up all of what it meant. ( My awesome team came third in our division!) While we were there we got to spend time with family and friends as well as visit Niagara Falls. Watching Harry ( someone losing their sight) take in the falls was amazing. It meant so much to him. However it was a bit of a bitter sweet moment. He was very grateful to be there and for a moment sad knowing he may not experience this wonder visually again.
Harry has continued to thrive, to be determined and positive in all he does. This has been possible because of the incredible support we receive from all of you. CNIB has been there with us from the start since Harry was diagnosed. He has benefited from going to CNIB camp where he has met many friends with similar eye conditions, he has learned about assistive technology through the CNIB and over the years will continue to benefit from programming they offer. I myself have taken part in orientation and mobility through the CNIB which was incredibly helpful.
Thank you is not enough but we truly and humbly thank you all for your incredible support.
Love,
The Nickersons
