Katie McClure hasn't added a story.
Hi I'm Katie McClure.... I'm also the daughter of Kitty and Phil Hauck, descended from Haucks in England and Germany and Harris' from Wales and South Africa, I have resilience inherited from my Great Grandmother who was a traveling opera singer and gave birth to my Grandfather in a covered wagon... as a young boy he did odd jobs and ended up at around age 13 working on a ship that traveled to America where he worked in vehicle repair, became an entrepreneur opening a small tire shop in Rockford, IL where he (and then his son, my uncle) worked until retirement. In his 80's he became a US citizen and I was there to witness.
I have suffered from abuse in relationships I've had, had to deal with tragic loss, and been limited in my career and education at certain times by my gender (more than I even realize).
I am also white European which means that in my genes, my family has not suffered from slavery, had their land or children taken from them.. it means that financially, my family - for generations - has not been limited by redlining, being banned from joining unions, have real estate documents disallow me from purchasing, or job opportunities be limited simply because of my race. I have no reason to fear or mistrust the education, health, law enforcement, or finance systems.
Why do I introduce myself this way? Because I've learned that I am more than my job and my role in my immediate family and my hobbies... I've learned that I draw from the resilience of my ancestors... I benefit from what they've overcome and what they have experienced societally. I've suffered and overcome. I have privilege. That's me and that's just a part of my story.
As a community and society we have real work to do. The United Way is building trust throughout our communities... which is where we will learn about where we're ignoring or overlooking or disregarding real strengths and beauty.... where we go beneath the soundbites and social media bits to the real stories and get to know each other... across the aisle, across the traumas, and unleashing the resilience in each of us.
I hope you'll consider giving to this cause. It's truly the most meaningful work I've done in my lifetime.
The money will go to the United Way to increase the awareness and knowledge about trauma and resilience - what it does to our bodies and brains, increase the comfort and competency of providers who serve anyone who has experienced trauma, support organizations and communities creating trauma informed policies and practices, and strengthening the networks of those who serve youth and children at risk of, or experiencing foster care.
This effort is already showing results... hundreds of thousands of dollars are flowing into our community from other sources because of the local efforts, those involved are overwhelmingly saying the work should continue, and people overwhelmingly say the trainings have taught them new information relevant to their life/work.
Please consider a gift and/or pass this along to your network. Most importantly, thank you for what you are already doing to create a more trauma-informed and resilience-nurturing community. Every little bit matters.
I'm going to rappel down the Oxford Hotel, in exchange for donations back to the amazing local non-profit organization, United Way of Deschutes County.
EVENT DATE: September 7th, 2019

About United Way of Deschutes County
At United Way of Deschutes County, we fight for the health, education, financial stability, and resilience of EVERY person in our Central Oregon community. We’re more than fundraisers. We’re changemakers.
Since 1953, United Way of Deschutes County has been strengthening communities in Crook, Deschutes, and Jefferson Counties and investing locally in our community’s most needed programs and services while simultaneously strengthening our community.
For 66 years, we’ve focused on HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND FINANCIAL STABILITY as the foundation of wellbeing and opportunity, along with basic needs like food, safety, and shelter.
As we continue to focus on these causes, we are also working upstream to tackle CHILDHOOD TRAUMA: the root cause of many challenges currently faced by so many in our community.
And, we’ve taken on RESILIENCE – the ability to manage hardship, cope with stress, and bounce back from trauma. Resilience is like an inoculation against the impacts of trauma. We work to improve lives and foster a healthier Central Oregon in 4 main ways.
1. We serve as an INCUBATOR for community movements, initiatives, and programs that need to exist in Central Oregon and fill those gaps by making them happen.
2. Through GRANTMAKING, we support local, direct-service nonprofits and programs that focus on a wide range of human health and wellness issues in our region.
3. We conduct NEEDS ASSESSMENT throughout our community. We gather data on poverty, financial hardship, basic needs gaps, resilience and more.
4. We offer PHILANTHROPIC opportunities. From individual community members to businesses and employers, everyone can give back to our community by giving to or through United Way.
We are investing in future solutions to the challenges that we have historically addressed through funding, such as basic needs, safety net, and prevention. While we will continue to address issues that are happening right now, we are simultaneously moving upstream to address the root causes of issues that are immediate today, so that they don’t exist tomorrow. Funding the immediate is necessary, but not sufficient.
Building on tradition and assuming a strong role in convening and collaborating with our Central Oregon community allows us to address these root causes of critical issues affecting our community. We remain focused on our community’s human and social service needs to improve lives and create measurable, sustained change in our community.
United Way of Deschutes County belongs to OUR Central Oregon community.
