As many of you already know, I have been working at
The Arc of Monroe for the last two
years, an organization dedicated to ensuring people with intellectual
and developmental disabilities (IDD) are supported, valued, and
empowered to live at their full potential.
This year, The Arc of Monroe and
The Arc Ontario are
partnering with
Over The Edge, an
organization that has raised over $150 million for various
non-profits since 2004. Those who raise a minimum of $1,000 get to
rappel down the side of one of the tallest buildings in Rochester,
the
Hyatt Regency, on September
17th. To me, this is more than an exciting opportunity to do
something crazy, it’s the chance to raise money for people who have
truly left an impact on my life.
I have chosen to participate in this year’s event for a couple
reasons. Over the past two years, I have been able to see up close
the difference The Arc makes for those with IDD in our community. I
have met hundreds of people supported by this agency and know how
crucial it is that they have access to its programs and services, as
well as how much of a difference a fundraiser like this can make on
their quality of life.
But long before I was ever involved in The Arc, I was exposed
directly to the level of support exhibited there. My Aunt
Cindy dedicated much of her
life to supporting her sister, my Aunt Kelly. Growing up, I knew
Kelly had disabilities, but I didn’t know at the time the support
she needed to live a fully integrated life. As I got older, I
realized just how much Cindy took on as both her sister and as
Kelly’s support.
Aunt Kelly passed away two years ago, but she’s no longer one of
a few people I know with disabilities. In honor of her and the
tremendous work and sacrifice Cindy made to provide the support she
knew Kelly deserved; they have inspired me to do my part in
contributing to the good work The Arc does to touch so many lives in
our community.
I will be kicking off my campaign with my own donation of 25% of
the goal. If you feel inspired and believe in the mission of The Arc
of Monroe, help me reach my goal of $1,000. If we reach it, I get to
go Over the Edge. If we don’t quite reach that amount, we still will
have given to a very worthy cause what it deserves for the gift it
provides people every day. Either way, I’m grateful you stopped by
my post and thought about the impact this fundraiser can have on
hundreds of lives. Thank you!
